GIN/NCG Thesis Prize 2024 for Andrea Griffioen

Andrea Griffioen has won the GIN/NCG Bachelor Thesis Award 2024 for her thesis ‘Introduction Hydrographic Education in South Africa’. Her thesis was selected as the winner by the jury because of its strong social relevance. Andrea describes the challenge that South African surveyors and hydrographers face, namely the lack of a certified (hydro)surveying education. The aim of her research is to present a framework for setting up a certified education that meets all required quality standards, laws and requirements.
The award was presented during the GIN Awards & Networking Reception on Monday evening 25 November, where the GIN/NCG Thesis Award for best master thesis, the Cartography Award and the GIN Prestige Award were also presented.
In 2017, GIN and NCG launched the search for the best thesis to discover new talent and to bind a next generation to the geo-domain. Programme coordinators of geo-related programmes can submit two theses per programme annually via the GIN website. In 2023, a distinction between bachelor’s and master’s theses was introduced for the first time to give bachelors more opportunities to compete for the prize. NCG provides the bachelor’s prize, GIN the prize for the best master’s thesis.
